You know God has a plan for your life, right? But does it seem like that plan is locked in some impenetrable vault that has no key? Knowing what God wants us to do is not always easy – especially when we’re faced with options. Sometimes I bemoan to Jesus, “Oh, Lord, I don’t know what you want me to do. Just tell me, please!”
I previously wrote an article, Did You Know God Speaks this Way?, in which I talk about trying to decide whether or not I should take a job at a friend’s company. It was during that time, I began a practice of praying a particular prayer to help me unlock that vault that contained the answer I needed.
This is the what I do…
When I’m trying to decide if something is God’s will for me – if I’m deciding if it’s a God-idea or just a good-idea – I pray this prayer…
“God, it’s time to make a decision. I’m still not 100% sure what you want me to do. I have an idea… and I know what I want to do. But I don’t want what I want. I want what You want. I don’t want to be distracted with good things and miss the great things you have for me. So, right now, this is what I think I’m supposed to do. But, God, if it’s not what I’m supposed to do, then stop me. Don’t let this go any further. I only want Your will. If it’s the wrong direction, redirect me. If it’s the right direction, I trust I’ll have peace and Your blessing will be upon it. Thank you, for speaking to me. In Jesus’ name. Amen” (I always say ‘in Jesus’ name – even when I eat – His name is powerful – I pray it – over everything)
Then I proceed with what I think I’m supposed to do. (Let me interject here… before I get to this point… my decision has been bathed in much prayer.)
Every time I have ever prayed this prayer, God has come through for me. There have been times, after making a decision, that I knew it was the wrong decision and was able to course-correct. Other times, it was the right decision and I had God’s peace and blessing. I don’t always know immediately. But soon enough… I know.
Listen Friends, God wants to speak to us. He wants to show us the way to go. But He’s always concerned about the process. And part of the process of doing God’s will is first learning to hear God’s will.
Sometimes we can’t unlock God’s will for our lives because we’re too afraid to take a step toward it. We become paralyzed by the fear of doing the wrong thing that we do nothing.
Friend, I can tell you from my experience… if you start out in the wrong direction, God will redirect you. I know. I’ve been redirected more than once. God is not going to let you wander off IF you stay close enough to hear His voice. (read the last sentence again, please)
Discerning the will of God often takes a process of elimination. Sometimes you don’t have a clue what to do until you start making decisions and eliminating what you realize won’t work.
Look, I’m sure there are better ways of figuring out how to unlock God’s will for your life. This is just my way. I’d rather take a wrong step and correct it than take no step and find myself in the same place ten years down the road because I was too afraid to make a move.
I want to encourage you to take a step. Make a move. But always be listening for God’s voice. If it’s the wrong move, He won’t let you go too far. If it’s the right move, He’ll say, “Look at you go. You’re changing the world.”
