How a Turkey Inspired Me to be Godly

Troy and I are back home now in Oklahoma waiting on his job to go through.  That can be a long process and he’s pretty much done with being unemployed.  The poor guy doesn’t know what to do with himself even though he has plenty to do.

Each evening we take a walk behind the house on the dirt road and talk about what’s now and what’s next. (the next part is a mystery)  On our walks all I’m thinking about is what we’re talking about and I casually look around looking at nothing in particular. (except a few deer, turkey and snake tracks)  That’s not how Troy does it.

As we walk and talk Troy’s always looking for wildlife.  Always.  (Once while driving down the highway Troy spotted a huge deer mount in these people’s house and we turned around went back so he could get a better look – I kid you not)

Anyway, when we started on our walk we could hear a turkey gobbling but we couldn’t see him.  One lone turkey.  Each time we’d hear him gobble, we’d stop and listen.  Then keep walking.

We had turned around and were heading back to the house when Troy stopped and said, “There he is!”

“Right over there.  Look straight ahead near the top of that hill.”

“That black dot?”

“Yeah,  Watch it.  It’s walking down the hill.”

“Oh.  Okay.  Yeah I see it.”

“How far away is that turkey?”

“I’d say 450-500 yards.”

“Wow.  And you saw that?”

It always amazes me how Troy can spot wildlife so easily.  Whether we’re walking or driving down the road, he can spot wildlife from very far away.  I asked him one time how he does it.  Here’s what he said…

“You have to train yourself to see what you want to see.  You have to look into the trees a certain way.  Look for specific things.  It just takes practice.  Keep training your eyes to see what you want to see and you’ll know it when you see it.”

Train yourself to see what you want to see…

That makes me think of the 1 Timothy 4:7 – Train youself to be godly.

If you want to see turkeys in the woods, train your eyes to see turkeys in the woods.  Know what a turkey looks like and train your eyes to see it.  In the same way, if you want to be godly, train yourself to be godly.  Know what godly looks like and train yourself to be it.

The best way to find out what godly looks like is to read your Bible and pray and ask God to show you.

That’s being godly. To achieve that… it just takes practice.

Put into practice the day to day things that God shows you about how to behave, how to carry yourself and how to respond to others.  Those are just a few of the ways you can live out your godly self.  If you look for ways to be godly… you’ll find them.

So just ask.  Just obey.  And never stop training.
