I read something in the Bible the other day that sparked my interest. That happens a lot. It was a passage that instructs us to be interested in something that interests God. What is it? People.
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I get a bit too wrapped up in myself, my life, my thoughts, my wants, my dreams my likes and on and on. Like it’s all about me. Me. Me. Me. I hope you’re never like that. It’s ugly.
When I get “all about me”, Philippians chapter 2 awakens me.
Philippians 2:3 (NLT) – “Don’t be selfish.”
How much more blunt can you get than that? None.
Selfishness is something I pray against. I think it’s so unbecoming. So not Christ-like. So… selfish. And I just don’t want to be selfish. Makes me sad when I am. So I repent.
Verse 4 picks it up saying…
“Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Wow! That’s big. Though He was God, He did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, He gave up His divine privileges; He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being.” I can only imagine…
Jesus could’ve clung to the Father in Heaven and refused to give up His privileges there. But He didn’t. He unselfishly came to this earth to rescue you and me.
Maybe you’ve heard that we should have the same attitude as Jesus. What was that attitude? He was unselfish. He was more interested in the needs of others than His own divine privileges. He left His divine privileges behind when He saw how sick, depraved and in need of a Savior the world He loved was.
How interested are we in others? Are we willing to be bothered? Are we willing to be inconvenienced? Are we willing to give up our own ease, pleasure and comfort to ease someone else’s pain? Give pleasure to those who are mistreated or lacking? And comfort the suffering?
Are willing to take on the same attitude Jesus Christ had and be (not just say we are) interested in othes? I mean really interested in others. The kind of interested where we go out of our way to make someone else’s life better? Share with someone who has less? Give to someone who has suffered loss?
I encourage you to take a moment and do a little self-evaluation. I’ve done this myself. Just take a moment and look and see if your attitude includes the interests of others. When you make decisions do you think about how those decisions will affect others? Do you let others into your life? Are you interested in others?
If we want to have the same attitude as Christ, we will be interested in others.
Find someone this week and show interest in them. You never know. Your interest in them may be the very thing they need to turn things around.
