There are days when I feel less than inspirational. Some days my mind wants to go on autopilot and not think about anything. I’m not fond of those days – the uninspired ones. So I work to keep myself out of that zone. It’s not always easy… but it’s absolutely necessary.
I asked myself one day, “Gwen, what’s the difference between the days you feel inspired and the days when you’d just as soon grab a bag of Doritos, sit on the couch and watch the news – all day? (I know. My tv choices are pathetic.)
After some thought, I pinpointed what inspires me. I find inspiration in these four things.
- Listening to God
- Being intentional
- Joining in community
- Gathering information
LISTENING TO GOD
We can be inspired by all kinds of people and all kinds of things but, honestly, the best inspiration comes when we slow down and have a conversation with God. God wants to tell us things that will inspire us to do His will. He wants to put that spark in us. He wants us to be inspired. He really has a lot to say.
Since God drew up the plans for our lives, we can gain much inspiration when we ask Him for directions and take the time to listen to the directions. After a good conversation with God in prayer and reading His Word, I have come away with ideas that astounded me! I have come away from conversations with God saying, “That’s good! How did I not see that before?! It’s so plain!”
Nobody drifts into success. And nobody becomes successful without being inspired. If we’re going to be inspired we have to be intentional about it. We have to intentionally seek out things that inspire us.
JOINING A COMMUNITY
A great way to stay inspired is to find people who are talking about what interests you. This year I joined two communities. As a writer who needs guidance in authoring a book, I joined Compel Training. Here I can talk with other women who are, or aspire to be, authors. In the forum, I can ask questions and bounce ideas off them.
Another community I recently joined is Propel Women. As a leader with a passion to encourage women to discover and develop their ministries, at Propel Women I find valuable resources I can pass along to the women I lead.
Another way to get inspired is to spend a few minutes each day gathering information that inspires you. Listen to the experts. (Or the experienced, at least.) Subscribe to blogs. Listen to podcasts. Buy books and READ READ READ! Reading blogs or books and listening to podcasts will keep us focused and intentional. Keeping our brains stocked with inspirational material gives us something to draw on. It’s the fuel that keeps us going in the direction of our dreams. Without it, we’d wonder aimlessly and never get where we want to go.
To see your calling fulfilled will require you to be inspired. God wants to pour ideas into you. He wants to inspire you with something that will meet a pressing need or answer a burning question. He wants to inspire you with something that will bring glory to Him and further His kingdom. He wants that for all of us.
It’s up to us to find the inspiration to bring God’s will to fruition. We can’t be passive. We must be active. If we actively and intentionally stay inspired, God will blow us away with the things He desires to do in our lives and ministries.
So listen to God. Be intentional. Join a community. And gather information that will inspire you and spur you on in the calling God has placed on your life.
