A few years ago, I went to the doctor because I was extremely tired. The kind of tired where I’d take a nap at least twice a day. I’d lay my head on my desk and fall asleep. I had no “go” in me. Somehow, I was still going. But I felt terrible.
The doctor did a test and told me I had adrenal fatigue. She said I needed to get rid of the stress that was bearing down on my adrenals. (she said I was whipping a dead horse) Before I could find a more polite response, I laughed. My plate was full and there was no way to clear it.
Her solution was to prescribe some natural adrenal support supplements. She said they would repair my adrenal glands and keep them from being over-stressed. She was right. They worked! I felt great! At least… as long as I took them.
I did well as long as I remembered to “take my medicine”. But sometimes I would forget. And after a couple of days off of the supplements, I began to feel run down again. Those supplements helped me to manage the stress on my body. I needed them. They helped.
Sometimes our body is over-stressed. And sometimes our soul is over-stressed.
The stress on the soul affects your mind, will and emotions. This stress can weigh you down and hide the joy in your life because your mind is just too tired. Too overwhelmed. Too heavy with worry.
Like the doctor had a prescription for my physical stress, the book of Psalms gives us a prescription for the stress within.
Psalm 119:143 reads – As pressure and stress bear down on me, I find joy in Your commands.
The reason we become weighed down with stress is often because we’re taking on things that God said, “Give to me.” We’re carrying things we weren’t meant to carry. We’re forgetting that Jesus said, Cast all your cares on Me because I care for you. That’s a command. And your greatest source of stress relief.
The Psalmist was saying, When I abide by the commands of God, I find my joy again. The pressure lifts. And the stress disappears.
What commands could he be talking about?
Well, how about…
Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5,6
Or how about…
Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken. Psalm 55:22
And don’t forget this one…
You can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly. You need not be afraid of sudden disaster or the destruction that comes upon the wicked, for the Lord is your security. He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap. Proverbs 3:24-26
Lastly, (at least on this post) you have to declare this one…
Lord, You alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing. You guard all that is mine. The land You have given me is a pleasant land. What a wonderful inheritance! I will bless the Lord who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me. I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for He is right beside me. Psalm 16:5-8
Can’t you just feel the stress lift already?! We could live a life of peace if we’d just remember the commands of the Lord. We become burdened with too much stress when we hoard it up instead of leaving it with the Lord. Can God not lift this burden from you? Can He not exchange your stress for peace? Of course, He can!
How do we know that relying on these commands of God will work? Because they’re not only commands, they’re promises and they’ve been tested.
Psalm 119:140 says, Your promises have been thoroughly tested; that is why I love them so much.
I encourage you to read and reread these promises and commands. Over and over God says, if you will do this… I will do that. Just read them again and assure yourself of what God will do if you release your cares to Him.
QUESTION: There are many Bible verses that can give us peace and relieve our stress. What are some that encourage you?
